Tummy Time Tips for Parents
Tummy time is more than just a milestone—it’s a vital part of your baby’s development that lays the groundwork for motor skills, strength, and coordination. At Imagine Early Education and Childcare, we understand how important these early moments are and are here to help you make tummy time a positive, enriching experience for both you and your child.
Why Tummy Time Matters
Tummy time helps your baby develop the muscles needed for rolling, crawling, sitting, and eventually walking. It also promotes healthy brain development, encourages visual tracking, and helps prevent flat spots on the back of the head. Even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference!
When to Start
You can begin tummy time as soon as your baby comes home from the hospital. Start with short sessions—just 2 to 3 minutes, two or three times a day—and gradually increase the duration as your child gets stronger and more comfortable.
Tips to Make Tummy Time Fun and Effective
- Use a Comfortable Surface: A soft blanket on the floor or a tummy time mat provides a safe and supportive space. Always supervise your baby closely during tummy time.
- Get Down on Their Level: Lie on your tummy face-to-face with your baby to keep them engaged and comforted. Your voice and expressions are powerful motivators.
- Incorporate Toys: High-contrast toys, mirrors, and textured items can capture your baby’s attention and encourage movement. Keep toys just out of reach to inspire reaching and pushing.
- Make It Routine: Build tummy time into your daily routine—after diaper changes, naps, or baths. Consistency helps your baby become more familiar and comfortable with the experience.
- Try Tummy Time on Your Chest: For newborns, laying them tummy-down on your chest while you recline is a cozy and comforting way to introduce tummy time.
- Celebrate Progress: Every small push-up or head lift is a big step! Celebrate with smiles and praise to make tummy time feel rewarding.
Common Concerns
It’s normal for some babies to fuss during tummy time at first. Start with short sessions and try different positions to find what works best for your baby. If you’re ever unsure about your child’s progress, don’t hesitate to speak with your pediatrician.
