Helping Young Students Make Great Friends This School Year

The beginning of a new school year is filled with possibilities—new teachers, new routines, and, of course, new friendships! For young children, learning how to make and keep friends is one of the most important parts of early social development. But making friends doesn’t always come naturally, it’s a skill that can be learned, supported, and practiced.

At Imagine Early Education and Childcare, we believe that strong friendships help build confidence, empathy, and a lifelong love of learning. Here are some simple, helpful tips you can share with your child to help them feel confident in making new friends this school year:

💬 1. Practice Friendly Conversation Starters

It can be hard to know what to say to someone new. Teach your child easy phrases like:

  • “Hi, what’s your name?”
  • “Do you want to play?”
  • “I like your backpack!”

Practicing simple greetings at home can help them feel more comfortable using them in the classroom or on the playground.

😊 2. Smile and Use Kind Body Language

A warm smile, eye contact, and a friendly tone can go a long way in helping others feel welcome. Remind your child that being approachable can encourage other kids to say hello or join in.

🧸 3. Find Common Interests

Children often make friends by playing together. Encourage your child to invite others to join their game, share toys, or talk about things they like—such as animals, favorite colors, or cartoons. Shared interests build fast bonds.

💡 4. Be a Good Listener

Friendship is a two-way street! Help your child understand the importance of listening when someone else is talking, waiting their turn, and showing they care about others’ feelings.

👐 5. Include Others

Sometimes kids form tight circles, and others may feel left out. Talk to your child about being inclusive inviting someone new to join their group or making sure no one is left alone during playtime.

❤️ 6. Practice Kindness Daily

Simple acts like saying “please,” “thank you,” or giving a compliment help children build positive relationships. When your child makes kindness a habit, it naturally attracts good friendships.

🕊️ 7. Be Patient and Keep Trying

Not every introduction will turn into a best friendship—and that’s okay! Encourage your child to be patient, stay kind, and keep reaching out to others. Making friends takes time, and every day brings a new opportunity.

👨👩👧 8. Role-Play at Home

Try fun role-playing activities where you take turns being “the new friend.” Practice how to approach someone, join in play, and solve small conflicts kindly. These little practice sessions help build confidence and prepare your child for real-life situations.

At Imagine Early Education and Childcare, our classrooms are built on connection, care, and community. We support children as they learn how to express themselves, respect others, and form meaningful friendships that last far beyond the classroom.

Here’s to a school year filled with kindness, laughter, and new friendships! 💛👫🌈
