How to Create a Healthy Sleep Routine for Kids

A healthy sleep routine for kids will help them fall asleep faster, sleep through the night, and wake up ready to have a great day. Most importantly, developing healthy sleeping habits early will set your child up for success later in life. When done correctly, a sleep routine will help children prioritize a good night of sleep, learn how to fall back asleep without help, and help them become more independent.

Here are a few tips for creating a bedtime routine for kids:

  1. Be consistent

Consistency is the most important part of any routine. The time you start your routine will largely depend on what you need to do before you tuck your little one in and turn off the lights. Make sure you give yourself enough time to do every step every night.

  1. Keep it short

You should keep the bedtime routine short and simple! Try to not let your child play in the bath for too long or watch TV for long periods. These activities can be stimulating and keep them awake past their bedtime. Reserve long baths and TV before bed for weekends. Stick to the basics during the week.

  1. The sooner, the better

Practice a bedtime routine with your kids before they go to school or daycare for the first time. This will help them adjust to the change easily, instead of feeling forced into a new routine.

  1. Don’t worry about crying too much

It’s perfectly normal for children to cry a little bit before they fall asleep and when they wake up in the middle of the night. Most of the time, they will get tired after a few minutes and fall asleep. However, if your child cries for a long time, there might be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Consider talking to your pediatrician for recommendations.
